THE WINNERS OF THE FIRST ROUND OF DOWNTOWN CHALLENGE 2.0  HAVE BEEN SELECTED. A TOTAL OF 23 PROJECTS TOTALING $502,275.00 IN GRANTS WERE AWARDED ON JUNE 8, 2021. FUNDING FOR THESE GRANTS IS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE PEYTON ANDERSON FOUNDATION AND THE JOHN S. AND JAMES L. KNIGHT FOUNDATION.


Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority  | Transfer Station Mural Completion | $14,500
This project will energize the corner of Poplar & Fifth Street with a bold injection of art by using the two remaining smaller panels as one large wraparound-the-block canvas to complete the Transfer Station’s expansive mural wall.

Wimberly Treadwell | Play Path through Downtown Alleys | $10,000
This project will create works of art that double as children’s games in the 10′ pedestrian alleys downtown. Local artists will be vetted, materials will be provided, and there will be a series of paint days during the summer.

Friends of Rosa Parks Square/Macon-Bibb County | Building the Rosa Parks Square  | $43,600
The Friends of Rosa Parks Square will complete a bid set of plans to build out the first phase of Rosa Parks Square’s redesign. This will provide the opportunity to raise the necessary funds to complete the renovation of the square.

Weston Stroud | Greenwood Bottom Mural Project| $15,000
This project will create a Greenwood Bottom Mural that would be an open call to visual artists. Artists would be paired with members of the neighborhood to talk to and learn from so that their work can be influenced by the community.

Museum of Arts and Sciences | Pop-Up Wildlife Programs| $12,600
This project will bring exciting pop-up wildlife encounters with the Museum’s most popular Mini Zoo animals. Participants will be able to meet lemurs, owls, talking birds, giant tortoises and reptiles.

NewTown Macon, Inc. | Ocmulgee Heritage Trail – Master Plan Refresh | $50,000
This project will refresh the existing Master Plan to account for recommendations by MAP and the existing trail expansions.

Tonja Khabir | Jones Cafe’ Open Source Conceptual Floor Plan | $7,500
Thsi project will work with design professionals to create the conceptual floor plan in order to run financial projections that will assist in developing plans for the former Bobby Jones Performing Arts Space renovation by a viable entity.

Macon-Bibb Urban Development Authority | Clinton Street Gateway Phase I | $50,000
This project will implement Phase I of the Clinton St Gateway Plan to grade the first section of the park, add trees, and program meantime uses.

Macon Arts Alliance | Reimagining Gateway Park at MLK & Riverside | $6,000
Macon Arts in partnership with Macon-Bibb County and Triangle Arts will install a mural at the Charles H Jones Gateway Park train trestle highlighting the intersection as a major gateway into Downtown Macon.

Pleasant Hill Neighborhood Organization Pleasant Hill Strategic Plan | $43,900
This project engages residents, community stakeholders, & gatekeepers in a strategy that identifies neighborhood goals, objectives, & priorities for development, investment, & community engagement to increase the quality of life in the neighborhood.

NewTown Macon, Inc./Scott Mitchell | SHINE | $25,000
This project will illuminate dark, vacant storefronts bringing them to life by bringing together local & national artists who will transform empty storefronts with the help of Dashboard, an art agency based in Atlanta that transforms space with artwork and imagination.

The Eric Foundation Youth Podcast, Radio, and Music Incubator Lab at Booker T. Washington Center | $19,675
This project will create a Podcast, Radio, Music, and Filming incubator lab program for youth that provides basic foundations for podcasting, radio, filming, and music of the arts.

Bike Walk Macon | Multi-Modal Macon | $22,000.
This project will improve conditions for bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit riders in the Urban Core by adding several low-cost but impactful facilities, including bus stop seating, lighting improvements, and bike racks at public spaces.

Macon Film Festival | Macon Film Festival Presents: Movies In My Park | $17,500
This project will highlight parks throughout the Urban Core by hosting a 6 part, family-friendly series.

Community Empowerment Solutions | Community Festival in Linear Park | $25,000
Community Empowerment Solutions, in partnership with Macon-Bibb County Community Enhancement Authority, will host a monthly Festival In Linear Park to enhance social cohesion, healthy food initiatives, engagement, inclusion, and cross-cultural awareness.

Macon-Bibb County Cooperative Extension | Equipping the Historic Train Building Auditorium | $40,000
This project will equip & furnish the auditorium for programs with chairs, tables, audio-visual equipment (including a user-friendly control panel), window coverings, and a moveable stage. Where possible, these furnishings will be obtained from local providers.

Weston Stroud | Greenwood Bottom Neighborhood Association | $3,000
This project will establish the Greenwood Bottom Neighborhood Association which will serve as a conduit for advocacy for the community.

Fathers Among Men | Adopt a Block | $15,000
Fathers Among Men will work with its proteges’ to build, buy, and maintain planters at major intersections that will beautify the community.

Streetline Percussion | The STREETLINE Initiative  | $10,000
This project will engage black consumers to shop & play downtown by creating relevant activities that can enhance the user experience. There will be 5 live performances with local black-owned businesses to also raise awareness and draw customers to black-owned businesses.

U Create Macon | The Playground Kids Film Festival | $2,000
The Playground Film Festival is a one-day kids film festival that gives youth the opportunity to showcase their talents in filmmaking. Participants will be given a theme and have creative freedom to produce a short film which would be shown at the Playground Kids Film Festival

NewTown Macon, Inc./Alex Habersham | Bringing African-Americans Downtown | $25,000
This project will attract, entertain and influence visitors to dine, play and live downtown by hosting six festival-like events every second Saturday of the month.

Macon-Bibb County | MLK Small Business District | $30,000
This project will develop a site plan for Greenwood Bottom along Bay Street to create a Small Business District.

MJM Consolidated Services, Inc. |  Booker T. Washington: The Work Space | $15,000
This project will host an 8-week program to help grow small retail, tech, and wholesale businesses in Macon’s underserved neighborhoods in partnership with the private sector, community, and economic development organizations.
